Een genderidentiteit buiten man of vrouw : Transgenderemancipatie in Nederland rond de eeuwwisseling  / Marc van Velzen.

samenvatting: In 1981 klopt een transgender vrouw aan bij de Nederlandse Genderstichting. Deze organisatie, opgericht in de jaren zeventig, geeft medische en maatschappelijke hulp aan transgender personen. De wens van deze anonieme vrouw, die zich voorstelt met de initialen Y.S., is ongebruikelijk in de ogen van medische specialisten. In plaats van een volledige transitie bestaande uit zowel hormoontherapie als een geslachtsoperatie wenst zij louter het gebruik van vrouwelijke hormonen. In de ogen van de endocrinologen en artsen is dit onwenselijk en daarom wijzen ze dit verzoek af. De vrouw gaat in bezwaar en schrijft een boze brief naar de Landelijke Werkgroep Travestie en Transsexualiteit, de Nederlandse zelfhulpgroep voor mensen met genderdysforie. In haar brief betreurt ze dat haar zelfkennis en die van andere transmensen niet serieus wordt genomen. "Tenslotte is het ons lichaam!" eindigt ze. Zij is een van de weinigen die deze gedachten op papier zet en naar de werkgroep verstuurt. Het duurt tot de eeuwwisseling tot dit geluid groeit. Het idee dat gender uit een breed spectrum bestaat en meer omhelst dan man of vrouw wordt rond 2000 steeds meer geuit.

samenvatting: The world is silently shaped and mediated by digital technologies, algorithms, and databased categorisations in what legal scholar Frank Pasquale terms a 'black box society', while the constraints of binary gender categorisation unravel as increasing numbers of genderqueer and nonbinary people step forwards. Considering digital technologies as an inextricably intertwined element of daily life, equally shaping gender and upholding binary-categorisation models rooted in colonial human categorisation techniques, this research examines how binary-discourse is programmed into digital systems shaping contemporary society, and if non-binary people can congruently exist with their gender in digitally mediated societies. Embracing approaches through the eyes of Karen Barad's theory of Agential Realism as a core concept to analyse genders mutual constitution with multiplicities of inter- and intra-acting digital systems and networks, the work considers the constraints this has upon digital gender identity, examining the boundaries and roles of digital platforms and profiles. and highlighting occurrences of programmatic discriminations and data violences. Secondly, digital and data neocolonialism are explored, offering a historical contextualisation of how gender has been realised withing and across databases and digital systems, and further solidified through platform- and surveillance-capitalist logic that is managed by big tech's sovereign control of the global data landscape. The last section discusses inclusive-design methodologies and data- and design-justice theories. Exploring if and how such approaches could viably work in different settings, the approach of inclusivity versus structural systemic change is questioned, while calling for an intervention in how data is conceptualised and understood to account for the in-flux nature of queer lives. The principle aim of this work is to offer a theoretical intervention and basis for exploring the research topic in greater detail and develop departure points for future research centring gender-inclusive system design practises.

samenvatting: While most policing of gender categorization in sport concerns a human unit of one, I've been maneuvering, since 2019, within a human unit of two, as part of a white, queer, gender-nonconforming pairs team with my figure skating partner Anna Kellar. Situating our training and activism within the growing movement for change in the sport, this piece considers some of our experiences, the challenges, and deep pleasures as we work to advance the skills and rule changes required to test and compete; to navigate racialized gender binarism and cis-heteronormitivity sedimented in training, rule, and custom; and to develop performance vocabularies to legibly represent queer gender.

samenvatting: This thesis provides an exploratory account of the lived experiences of autistic queer people, with a focus on the influence of gender norms on their identity. Autistic queer people have often been pathologised in scientific literature, leading to the methodological choice for constructivist grounded theory and oral history interviews. This research uses two theories to help guide the analysis: West and Zimmerman?s theory on "doing gender"and Simon and Gagnon's sexual scripting theory. Four oral history interviews were conducted with autistic individuals who identified as genderqueer and non-heterosexual. They were all assigned female at birth and grew up in a Western country. Analysis of the data was done in line with a constructivist grounded theory approach. The data suggests that gender norm internalisation by autistic queer people is limited, as well as their reproduction of gender normative behaviour in interaction. However, the degree and manner of accountability matters in their decisions on norm adherence. Furthermore, rejection of normative structurisation in general has implications for how autistic queer people define their identity and mitigate negative externalities of gender norm-breaking behaviour. Specific double burdens arise due to the intersection of autism with a queer identity that worsen the impact of diverging from gender norms. Future research should further explore the relationship between interaction and gender norm internalisation. Special attention also needs to be paid to depathologising both the research design as well as language of any future research, to prevent further stratifying existing gendernormative structures that harm autistic queer people.
